Police are responding to a report of an unexplained death in Matipo Street, Riccarton, reported at around 3.50am.

A police spokeswoman said inquiries are ongoing to determine the circumstances of the incident.

Part of the street is cordoned while a scene examination takes place.

Members of the public are asked to avoid the area. 

Wharenui School is in part of the cordon but is open today.
