Emergency services were called to the scene of a vehicle crash on the Lewis Pass this afternoon.
A police spokeswoman said the crash happened near Magdalen Valley Road, just after 3:35pm.
Three helicopters, one from Greymouth and two from Christchurch, were dispatched to the scene.
A St John Ambulance spokeswoman said three ambulances were called to the scene.
“We assessed and treated six patients; one with serious injuries and one with minor injuries flown to Christchurch hospital, and four remaining patients with minor injuries who were treated at the scene, not requiring transportation.”
NZTA said the road was closed between Hanmer Springs Turnoff and Springs Junction.
The agency is asking motorists to delay their travel and consider using an alternative route.
It was expected to be reopened by 6pm.
