Emergency services are responding to a serious crash that has closed State Highway 8 at Pukaki.

A police spokesman said they were alerted to the crash about 1.30pm.

Tekapo-Twizel Road is closed between Hayman Road and Tekapo-Canal Road.

“Initial indications suggest there are serious injuries.”

A motorist said the accident involved a motorcyclist and two vehicles, one which was on its side.

Those seriously injured had been pulled from the crashed vehicles and were lying on a grass area a witness said.

At least 3 helicopters were sent to the scene.

Motorists are asked to delay travel or expect delays a police spokesman said.
