Christchurch City Council will start safety upgrades at one of the city’s most dangerous intersections.

The project targets the roundabout connecting Cashmere Road, Colombo Street, Centaurus Road, and Dyers Pass Road, known for its high crash rate, and is expected to conclude in early July.

The intersection has witnessed 27 crashes from 2010 to 2021, with nearly a third resulting in serious injuries. In response, the Council is implementing a series of safety measures to mitigate these risks and protect the community.

Stephen Wright, Christchurch City Council Transport Operations Manage said “Our goal is to introduce safe speed treatments on all approaches to this intersection.

“By reducing speed, we’re giving drivers more time to respond, thereby reducing both the likelihood and severity of crashes.”

The safety improvements extend beyond speed reduction.

The project includes reconfiguring kerb alignments, upgrading footpaths, and refreshing road markings.

A standout feature is the construction of a concrete apron around the roundabout’s center, designed to slow down vehicles as they navigate the roundabout.

Residents and commuters can expect changes in traffic patterns, including the implementation of temporary traffic lights, shoulder and lane closures, and the removal of some on-street parking.

Wright acknowledges the inconvenience but stresses the long-term benefits.

“We’re aware of the disruptions these works might cause and we’re thankful for the community’s patience. These improvements are crucial for ensuring the safety of all road users at this intersection.”

Construction starts in early April.
