Clocking up thousands of volunteer hours, more than a dozen shows and the best talent to grace a Selwyn stage, CentreStage Rolleston has come a long way in just five years.
Chair and founding member Phil Dean said 2024 is going to be a big year for the theatre company.
“Over the years we’ve done some amazing shows, from After Hours: From the Twenties to the Twenties and Chicago, to Bonnie & Clyde and Calendar Girls.
“We started off small, with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at Rolleston Primary School.
Now we’re getting ready to put on one of our biggest productions yet.”
Phil said those involved in CentreStage Rolleston over the years do it because they all have one thing in common – a love of theatre.
“Be it singing, acting or dancing. Sometimes even all three! We’ve had young people, and people a little older than me involved in all sorts, from behind the scenes to right out there centre stage.
“We wouldn’t be celebrating our fifth birthday if it wasn’t for all the support we have received over the years, and that includes the wonderful support we get from those who come along to our shows.”
Born out of a simple idea to bring theatre to Selwyn, CentreStage Rolleston has gone from strength to strength.
In 2024 the company will put on three big shows and host a new singing competition.
Starting with what’s possibly one of the most well-known Disney movies of all time, Mary Poppins will come floating into Rolleston College from 18-27 April.
Tickets are on sale now for this show, and are selling out fast. Visit centrestagerolleston.org.nz to find out more.
In May, the theatre group will welcome young singing superstars as it hosts for the first time Illuminate, what’s thought to be Selwyn’s first performing arts competition for those aged 18 and under.
In July, crowds will witness to the mystery of Agatha Christie’s masterpiece, The Mousetrap, the longest-running play in history.
And what comes after that? “Well, we have to keep something up our sleeves,” Phil said.
Get along to support CentreStage Rolleston as they celebrate their best year yet.
