A person has died following a serious crash on Main South Road in Selwyn earlier this evening.

The crash was reported to police at 5.40pm and happened near Selwyn Lake Road on a train crossing but no locomotives were involved.

The crashed involved a ute and horse float and a smaller car, which was badly crushed in the accident.

Chris Lynch Media was sent photos of the crash site, but has chosen not to publish them.

The Serious Crash Unit was still at the scene just after 9PM.

NZTA said the road was closed between Selwyn Lake Road and Boundary Creek Road.

Diversions were in place via Selwyn Lake Road, Rakaia Selwyn Road and Boundary Creek Road.
