A person has died following a crash on Rakaia Highway, Ashburton this morning.

Emergency were called to the serious two vehicle crash involving a car and a truck on Rakaia Highway at 10:20am.

A person passed away at the scene a police spokesperson said

“Our thoughts are with their family at this difficult time.”

The Serious Crash Unit is attending the scene and an investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.

NZTA said SH1 remains closed south of Rakaia township, near the intersection with South Town Belt.

The road is likely remain closed for several hours.
