A Christchurch man, who was first at the scene of a crash involving youths, filmed the culprits enduring his verbal reprimand after he chased them down, halted their escape, and performed a citizen’s arrest.
Last Friday, two young offenders crashed their stolen car into another motorist on the corner of Brougham Street and Opawa Road in Waltham.
The two boys tried to flee the scene on foot, despite the injured driver of the other car being an elderly woman, in need of medical assistance.
Police were called and the youths were taken into custody a short time later.
In a video sent to Chris Lynch Media, Christchurch resident Mark can be heard shouting with rage at the youths, who sit cowering on the ground with police eventually arresting them.
Mark said the offenders tried to run away following the crash, but he chased them down and held the pair until police came.
“The kids took off in their car, and they were going so fast, one of their wheels had snapped off and the car crashed into the gutter, he said.
“I saw them get out, and they just had a really bad vibe about them, it was obvious they were mixed up with the wrong crowd.”
Mark said he thought of all the ram raids which had been happening across the city, and wanted the offenders to be held responsible.
“I decided to follow them in my truck, and then got out and chased the pair until I had them cornered.
In the video Mark yells at the offenders. “See these two little c***ts … I just caught them in a f*****g hit and run. Stolen f*****g stolen car clearly. Hey ya f*****g little piece of s**t.
“As you can see from the video, they were absolutely terrified when I was speaking to them, they were really quite shaken up.
“I don’t think they’d had someone go off at them like that before. I did my best to scare them, in a non violent manner before the Police arrived.”
Mark said the youths were relieved when police turned up a couple of minutes later.
“You could see the relief on their faces, as soon as they saw the police, they knew they were safe.”
Mark said the injured elderly driver was thankful that someone stepped in and stopped the youths from getting away, along with giving them a good telling off.
Chris Lynch Media understands the boys were involved in a recent burglary of commercial premises.
A police spokesperson said they were speaking with the two youths involved and enquiries into the incident were ongoing.
