National Party Leader Christopher Luxon has announced if elected, National would build a Pegasus to Belfast motorway and construct a Woodend Bypass.

National campaigned in 2017 and 2020 on constructing the motorway as a “logical extension of the transformational Western Belfast Bypass and Northern Corridor motorways.”

The extension to the Northern Motorway would begin at Belfast, where it joins with the Western Belfast bypass and the Northern Corridor motorways, and would go through to Pegasus, bypassing Woodend.

It would be a four-lane state highway with separation between traffic travelling in opposite directions.

It would include wide lanes and sealed shoulders and will provide safe roadsides clear of obstacles.

Luxon Chris Lynch Media the Woodend Bypass was needed as the current State Highway One was very dangerous in it current form.

The Woodend Bypass was first confirmed in 2013 following safety concerns from the community.

But Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency stalled the project.

Luxon said National would also build a second Ashburton bridge.

He announced upgrades to Halswell Road, Weedons Ross Road, and improvement to Brougham Street in Christchurch.

Christopher Luxon’s full interview with Chris Lynch will be published at 7PM across Chris Lynch’s online channels.
