A youth was arrested after wreaking havoc at a bottle store in Burwood.

The incident unfolded on Parnell Street at Thirsty Liquor on Sunday afternoon leaving locals in shock.

According to a resident who spoke to Chris Lynch Media, as she and her mother approached the store, they noticed one of the employees conversing with two members of the public across the road.

They were informed to stay away as a “robbery was in progress.”

“I could see there was someone in the store just absolutely smashing everything, all the bottles .. one by one .. he wasn’t yelling or anything.”

The resident and a few others attempted to warn people away from the unfolding danger.

Soon after, a police officer arrived on the scene, prompting the suspect to emerge from the store.

The teeanger surrendered, raising his hands, leading to his immediate arrest.

Moments later, another police car arrived to provide further support the resident said.

“I left the scene in shock, really. Burwood is usually so quiet, but lately, we’ve been experiencing an increase in car thefts and break-ins, mostly involving young individuals.”

Earlier, police said a person was arrested following an attempted robbery.

Later on Monday afternoon, a police spokesman said the person arrested was a youth.

It’s understood the teenager was suffering a mental health issue.

No charges have been laid.

Confirming the incident, a police spokesperson said police were called to a commercial premises on Parnwell Street at around 2.50pm after a person entered the premises with a weapon.

“The person then proceeded to damage the store.”

Enquiries into the incident are ongoing the police spokeswoman said.
