Emergency services are at the scene of a serious incident at Lyttelton Port.
A Police spokeswoman said they are assisting ambulance with an incident at Cashin Quay, Lyttleton that was reported shortly before 9.30am.
A St John Ambulance spokeswoman said St John was notified of an incident in Lyttleton at 09:12 and responded one ambulance, one intensive care paramedic and one manager.
“We were not required for transportation. Please refer all further enquires to Police.”
It is understood a man has been buried by coal.
A WorkSafe spokeswoman said they have been notified of this incident.
“We are making initial enquiries to determine our next steps.”
“Please note WorkSafe has not opened a formal investigation at this stage.”
