A top road police officer has described frightening footage of a car repeatedly crossing the centre line on the Crown Range as “a blatant disregard for the road and others on it.”

The Crown Range lies between Queenstown and Wanaka and is New Zealand’s highest main road.

The video sent to Chris Lynch Media was captured by a passenger in the car behind the dangerous driver on Monday afternoon.

In the video, the car crosses the centre line multiple times during, including on blind corners.

At one point coming dangerously close to an oncoming car.

The passenger who filmed the incident said they confronted the driver when he stopped the vehicle.

“I asked nicely to keep to left-hand side of the road as he was putting himself, his passengers and others in danger.”

“There were a few near misses that we didn’t capture on video.”

“He needs to re-sit his driver’s license exam or re-learn the New Zealand road code” the passenger said.

“With the number of head-on collisions happening on New Zealand roads, his behaviour was unacceptable.”

Otago Lakes Central Area Road Policing Team Leader Steven Watt told Chris Lynch Media “police were concerned to see videos like this where drivers show blatant disregard for the road and others on it.

“Many of the roads through Central Otago are challenging and leave no room for error. Not only that, but we’re coming up to winter, where weather can be treacherous and greatly affect conditions on the road.”

Watt said “we encourage people to please, stick to road markings and posted speed limits, and take extra caution on winding, wet, icy and snowy roads.

It’s not worth risking your life or the lives of others simply to get somewhere marginally faster. We want everyone to get where they are going safely.”
