A man who was first on the scene to a serious crash has described the harrowing scenes he faced while rescuing a trapped baby from the wrecked car.
Police received a report of a single-vehicle collision on Wairakei Road at about 8.50pm last night.
St John Ambulance responded to the crash with three ambulances.
Three patients were taken to hospital – two in serious condition; one in moderate condition.
One further patient in minor condition was assessed and treated at the scene.
Jamie Album, who lives on the corner of Todd Avenue and Wairakei Road, told Chris Lynch Media he was upstairs in his room when he heard a screeching sound and a frightening crash.
“I ran down my stairs and sprinted across the road. As I’m running across the road, the lady who was half out the passenger door with her legs stuck from the dashboard and door crushing her lower half, she was yelling ‘get my baby.’
“As I was opening the passenger door on the driver’s side, I noticed the baby was unharmed, so continued to check the male who was in the back, whilst another lady checked the passenger and driver.”
Jamie says by this time multiple people were attempting to help free the trapped passengers.
“Myself and the other lady directed them to grab the baby out of the car seat and keep it warm and safe.
“A man in the back seat sustained head damage and was bleeding significantly, these injuries were the same as the driver.
“The passenger in the front will have broken legs and had cuts all up her arms.
“No one was wearing any seatbelts as we did not have to remove them, thank God the baby was restrained properly, as it would have been a completely different outcome.”
Jamie says the crash has had a large effect on his mental health.
“While I have been at work today, my mind keeps having a flashback to the initial scene and feeling of desperation to make sure everyone was alive and safe.”
Jamie believed the crash occurred as the car was speeding around the bend where the NPD station is.
“Whether they lost control of the vehicle or were arguing in the car, I don’t know.
“There were also bourbon cans throughout the car, so alcohol was a factor.”
