Her Royal Highness, Princess Anne will visit Christchurch later this month.

Prime Minister Chris Hipkins announced the royal visit on Thursday.

Princess Anne will attend centenary celebrations for a New Zealand Army contingent she is the symbolic colonel in chief of, alongside her husbane Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence.

“Princess Anne is travelling to New Zealand at the request of the NZ Army’s Royal New Zealand Corps of Signals, of which she is Colonel in Chief, to attend its 100th anniversary celebrations at Linton Military Camp in Palmerston North,” he said.

“It’s terrific that Her Royal Highness will be able to connect with past and present members of the Corps and acknowledge the importance of signallers within New Zealand Defence Force operations over the last 100 years.”

Mayor Phil Mauger said she will also carry out a small number of engagements including rededicating the reinstated Citizens’ War Memorial in Cathedral Square.

“Christchurch has poured a lot of heart and soul into restoring the Citizens’ War Memorial and we can’t think of a more fitting way to mark this journey coming to an end than alongside Princess Anne.

She has strong military ties and we know this is close to her heart,” Mayor Mauger said.

“Her presence will be a huge honour to the many people who gave their lives for our country, as well as the hardworking team that restored the memorial to its former glory.”
