Members of Christchurch’s rugby community are rallying support for a man seriously assaulted in Christchurch.

Wynton King was attacked and knocked out on Hereford Street, while he was walking to a bar on Sunday 23rd October.

He was rushed to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition and placed in an induced coma in ICU.

An 18-year-old man was charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent to injure.

His sister Amber Sowman told Chris Lynch Media on Thursday “Wynton is determined, and with a massive support network is making amazing progress, walking, talking, eating and drinking – with assistance.

Wynton is slowly but surely on his road to recovery. His Sydenham Club rugby crew has arranged a fundraiser for him with all funds raised going towards Wynton’s rehabilitation, and travel costs for his Mum and sisters to be with him on his journey.”

The fundraiser evening will include Crusaders’ assistant coach James Marshall hosting a guest panel that will include recent World Cup-winning black ferns, Alana and Chelsea Bremner, and other surprise guests on the couch at Benny’s Barber Shop, in the heart of Sydenham.

Auction items will include some “big ticket items” and there will be plenty of signed rugby memorabilia including an All Blacks jersey signed by the team from the recently completed Autumn series and Crusaders’ collectibles signed by Dan Carter and Richie McCaw.

There will also be a raffle, with prizes ranging from vouchers to a portable spa. Corey Flynn will also be on the guest panel.

“Should anyone wish to make a donation for the auction or a raffle prize, we encourage them to make contact with the Sydenham Rugby Club” Sowman said.
