Residents in Strowan managed to chase down and catch a 19-year-old, who now faces multiple charges relating to a stolen vehicle and a hit and run.
Two youths were photographed by a neighbour switching car plates at St Andrew’s College on Normans Road at 11.25 AM Sunday.
When they were approached, a witness said they took off in the car down the street and then tried to steal another car on St Andrews Square.
The alarm of that car went off, so they sped off again, this time, hitting a car on Norman’s Road as they went straight through the stop sign” the witness said.
“They didn’t stop for the poor woman driver. My neighbour chased them in his car, and the offenders ended up crashing at the end of Hartley Ave.”
One of the youths was arrested on the spot, while another ran away from the scene.
The local said “sadly my son saw this whole thing play out and was one of first on the scene to the lady whose car was flipped on its side. She was fortunately ok!”
A police spokeswoman confirmed to Chris Lynch Media that a 19-year-old-man was arrested and faces eight charges relating to driving and theft of a vehicle.
He’ll appear in the Christchurch District Court later this week.
There’s no word on the other offender.
A St John Ambulance spokesperson said they weren’t required to attend the incident.
