Police have charged a man in relation to a serious assault outside a Christchurch bar early on Sunday.

Police responded to several reports of a fight involving up to 20 people on Hereford St just after midnight. 

One victim was knocked out and was taken to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition, where he remains in a serious but stable condition. 

Today, Christchurch Police have charged an 18-year-old man with Causing Grievous Bodily Harm with Intent to Injure. 

He faces a separate charge of Injuring with Intent to Injure, in relation to the alleged assault of another victim during the same disorder incident. 

The man is due to appear in the Christchurch District Court on Friday.

Two other people have received formal warnings, relating to fighting in public and obstruction. 

A police spokesman said “During this incident, police were focused on providing immediate care for the critically injured victim, but we want to identify and speak to anyone who was involved.
