A resident who lives opposite the scene of a shooting in central Christchurch said “it was only a matter of time” before something like this happened.
A man was shot outside a house near the intersection of Hereford Street and Stanmore Road.
The shooting was reported to police just after 11.15am. The man shot is in a serious condition.
A resident who lives opposite the scene told Chris Lynch she heard shots being fired.
“I didn’t think straight away that it was shots and didn’t see the car involved. But police showed up really quickly.”
The resident said the shooting happened outside a house that was always being visited by police.
“There’s fights and arguments almost every night at that house. Police have made drug busts there before.”
During a recent fight, the resident said baseball bats and golf clubs were used.
“Sorry to say it was only a matter of time before it got worse.”
Detective Senior Sergeant Tania Jellyman said police were in the early stages of an investigation.
“There have been no arrests at this time.”
Police were using metal detectors at the intersection of Hereford Street and Stanmore Road this afternoon.
Cordons remain in place on Hereford Street and Stanmore Road as police undertake a scene examination.
