Debbie Newman, a dedicated volunteer and long-time leader at Parklands United Sports Club, has been recognised with a Couplands Community Award for her outstanding commitment to community sport.
Debbie has been an integral part of the club for more than 40 years, serving in numerous roles including coach, manager, secretary, bar manager, and, for the past five years, Club President.
She was nominated by fellow community member Michelle Baker, who praised Debbie’s tireless efforts in supporting the Parklands community across a wide range of sporting codes — including football, netball, touch and cricket.
“She works behind the scenes to ensure there are sporting opportunities for everyone in our community, from three-year-olds to our Senior Men’s Over 50s,” Michelle said.
Parklands United now boasts more than 1,000 members, and much of that growth and success is credited to Debbie’s leadership and dedication.
Despite holding down a full-time job, Debbie is a constant presence at the club every Saturday — from opening at 8.30am through to closing time at 8.30pm.
“Without someone like Debbie behind the scenes, the Parklands community would be at a loss for sporting opportunities — from keeping our young children active, to getting school mums back out on the netball court,” Michelle said.
The Couplands Community Awards celebrate everyday heroes who go above and beyond to make a difference.
