A controlled burn at Bottle Lake Forest filled parts of Christchurch’s east with smoke on Monday.

A Fire and Emergency communications spokesperson told Chris Lynch Media the operation had been underway for several days, but weather conditions meant residents would notice more smoke than usual.

He said fire crews had visited the site earlier in the day and confirmed everything was proceeding as planned.

Smoke covers parts of Christchurch’s eastern suburbs

A resident in Redwood said, “All of a sudden everything is thick with smoke, and I’m pregnant and can’t even go outside.”

Another resident in Burwood questioned why the smoke was “very thick.”

This morning’s heavy fog across the city caused the smoke to sit lower than it normally would.
