A  surfer was rescued off Scarborough on Tuesday afternoon after being spotted in trouble in rough conditions.

Coastguard Sumner said a member of the public pressed the emergency button at their building at 3.56PM, triggering the station’s siren and alarms. The person had seen the surfer being carried out to sea by strong conditions during a big southerly storm.

With time critical, HamiltonJet Rescue was launched within seven minutes and located the surfer just three minutes later.

The surfer was brought back to the station for a medical check and was fortunately uninjured.

Coastguard Sumner said they were grateful to the eagle-eyed member of the public who quickly raised the alarm.

A total of 17 volunteers responded to the callout, with 21 attending regular Tuesday night training later that evening.

Two vessels were launched at dusk for training exercises, giving the crew valuable experience in the challenging conditions as the southerly storm continued to blow.
