Christchurch’s new $683 million stadium is rapidly taking shape, with major progress on the roof, premium hospitality spaces, and key structural components.

In a video released today, Christchurch City Council Project Director Kent Summerfield said construction had been moving at a great pace, with significant developments in the southern section.

“The team on site continue to move along at great pace and, in the southern area, we’re now well advanced with the roof and façade cladding,” Summerfield said.

Crews have also started installing stairs in the south stand, which backs onto Tuam Street. With the steel superstructure completed in late January, the large cranes and temporary roof support structures are no longer needed.

“We’ve decommissioned several of our large cranes, and the hydraulic support towers will be deconstructed over the next month,” Summerfield said.

Inside the stadium, work is also progressing on the function lounge on level one of the west stand, a space designed to host almost 900 people. The lounge can be divided in two with an operable wall and features a kitchen and bar area in each section.

“All the flooring is down, framing and the glazing in, and the fit-out for the kitchen and bar areas well advanced,” he said.

The hospitality spaces, including a balcony with uninterrupted views of the field, are taking shape alongside the premium general admission area on the third floor, which is also undergoing its fit-out.

“Alongside the great views, this area will also have dedicated services, including a feature bar,” Summerfield said.

Once completed, the stadium will include a large function lounge, 23 corporate suites, and 32 food and beverage outlets. It will have a capacity of 30,000 for sports matches and at least 36,000 for concerts, making it Christchurch’s premier venue for large-scale events.

Summerfield confirmed that construction remains on budget and is on track for an April 2026 opening.

“The excellent progress the team has made over the last month means that we’re on target for an opening in April 2026 and the project remains on budget,” he said.

With steady progress on all fronts, Christchurch’s long-awaited stadium is shaping up to be a world-class venue, promising to transform the city’s sports and entertainment scene.
