Christchurch police are speaking to a person following a threat that led to a Parklands school going into lockdown this morning.

A police spokesperson said they were made aware of a threat relating to Parkview school earlier today.

“As a precaution, the school made the decision to place themselves into lockdown,” the spokesman said.

Police confirmed they were speaking with a person in relation to the threat, and at this stage, there is not believed to be any further risk to public safety.

In a message sent to parents via the school app, Parkview Pārua School principal Kent McDonald said, “This morning, we were made aware of a possible threat to some of our students.

“As a safety precaution, we closed all the classrooms for health and safety reasons while we sought advice.

“We have been supported by the New Zealand Police, ensuring that the correct procedures have been followed appropriately.

“We have listened to their recommendations and kept staff and students in learning spaces whilst the threat has been investigated.”

McDonald said, “We understand that this is a concerning situation, and we want to assure you that the safety of our students and staff remains our top priority.

“The students and staff have responded incredibly well, and we appreciate your patience and support.

“The school will be dismissed as per usual at 2:45pm.”

McDonald said the school would continue to provide updates via the Hero app if any additional information became available.

Two parents contacted chrislynchmedia.com expressing concerns over what they felt was an unacceptable delay in being notified about the incident.

In a statement chrislynchmedia.com Parkview Pārua Board of Trustees said “the safety of our students and staff is always our top priority. This morning, we followed our school safety protocols and sought advice from New Zealand School Boards Association in response to information we received.

“The situation was resolved calmly, and normal dismissal procedures were followed.

“We have been in close contact with New Zealand Police, who are now handling the matter, and we are following their guidance.

As this is a Police matter, we are unable to provide further details at this time. We appreciate the support of our community and ask that any specific inquiries be directed to the Police.”
