A special train journey from Christchurch to Kaikōura will offer passengers the chance to experience Matariki under some of the country’s clearest night skies.
Great Journeys New Zealand is launching the Matariki Rail Experience, a one-night return trip timed for the Māori New Year, featuring stargazing, cultural insights, and a winter dining experience.
The journey, set for 21 June 2025, will take passengers from Christchurch to Kaikōura, where they will visit Fyffe House for an evening of expert-led stargazing using telescopes, including one with Bluetooth smartphone connectivity.
Kaikōura was officially designated an International Dark Sky Sanctuary last year, recognising its exceptional stargazing conditions.
Great Journeys New Zealand General Manager Tracey Goodall said the new rail experience was designed to showcase New Zealand’s natural beauty while offering a deeper connection to Matariki.

“The experience aligns well with research from Tourism New Zealand, which found that over 70% of people considering visiting New Zealand are interested in stargazing,” Goodall said.
“We’ve created this journey to highlight our stunning landscapes and night skies for both domestic and international visitors.”
Passengers will be served a seasonal onboard menu including a snack platter, entrée, and winter roast dinner before arriving in Kaikōura at sunset. They will then be transported to the stargazing location before returning to Christchurch at 10PM the same day.
Destination Kaikōura Manager Lisa Bond said the trip would offer a unique way for visitors to experience the region’s natural beauty and cultural significance.
“This journey isn’t just about the breathtaking coastal scenery—it’s a chance to reflect, reconnect, and celebrate Matariki in a meaningful way,” Bond said.
“We look forward to welcoming visitors and sharing the magic of Kaikōura’s night skies.”
