Police have released a statement warning motorists to expect delays on some Canterbury roads this weekend as a large car enthusiast event takes place across three nights.

Authorities are also urging the public to report any unlawful activity.

Sergeant Ben Rutherford said extra police staff, including the Antisocial Road User Team, will be patrolling Christchurch and rural Canterbury roads to monitor the event.

“We have been in contact with the event organiser, who has been very receptive, and while we do not expect any issues at the event itself, we know from previous years there may be unlawful activity from a small section of attendees and other motorists following the event,” Rutherford said.

“Dangerous driving behaviour will not be tolerated.”

Police are reminding attendees to enjoy themselves responsibly and warning that enforcement action will be taken against illegal activity.

“Antisocial road user activity not only puts the drivers at risk, but also passengers, bystanders, and members of the public,” Rutherford said.

Motorists witnessing dangerous or unlawful driving are encouraged to report it to Police on 111 if it is happening immediately, or via 105 online or over the phone if reporting after the fact.
