A woman is in a serious condition after being hit by a car in the Christchurch suburb of Shirley.

A police spokeswoman told Chris Lynch emergency services were called to the crash at the intersection of Marshland Road and Voss street at 8.30pm.

The 50-year-old woman has received serious injuries and has been rushed to Christchurch hospital.

Chris Lynch Media understands the car involved was not speeding.

A local resident said police had condoned off part of Marshland Road.

Police remain at the scene of the crash.
