Three newly established charter schools have officially opened their doors today.

Mastery Schools New Zealand – Arapaki in Christchurch, L’École Française Internationale in Auckland, and Te Rito, Te Kura Taiao in Doubtless Bay welcomed their first students with celebrations, as part of a growing charter school network aiming to provide alternative learning environments for students.

Charter School Agency Chief Executive Jane Lee said the openings mark a significant step forward in education, bringing more choice for families and new opportunities for students.

“The introduction of more diverse learning options in our communities opens more choice for families and students and offers a new start for children who have been disengaged or who will benefit from a different approach,” Lee said.

The Mastery Schools programme is evidence-based and designed for students who have struggled in mainstream education. Each class includes one core teacher and three teaching assistants, ensuring a high level of support.

Four more charter schools are set to open in the coming days. TIPENE, the South Auckland Māori boys’ boarding school, will welcome its first students on February 6, Waitangi Day, with Associate Minister for Education David Seymour in attendance.

The BUSY School New Zealand in central Auckland opens on February 7, while North West College in Auckland and Christchurch North College start their terms on February 10.

More charter schools are expected to be announced later this year or in early 2026.

The Charter School Agency is also preparing to invite existing state schools to express interest in becoming charter schools, as well as opening applications for new sponsors to establish further schools.
