A Christchurch woman is speaking out about the debilitating effects of Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW), a painful, medically induced reaction caused by long-term use of prescribed steroid creams and oral medications.
For the past four and a half years, Becky Bouterey has been suffering from extreme skin flares, chronic pain, and severe discomfort, leaving her housebound and struggling to complete basic daily tasks.
Becky is now raising funds through a Givealittle page, to travel to Thailand for Cold Atmospheric Plasma Therapy, a treatment that has shown success in reversing the skin damage caused by steroid use.
Speaking with Chris Lynch Media, Becky says her life has been upside down, with symptoms including burning, inflamed skin, deep itching, lacerations, oozing, and recurring infections.
“Simple tasks like washing my hair or preparing food have become painful and overwhelming, she says.
“This condition has left me unable to work, attend social events, or live a normal life. I was once a happy, active person, but now I spend days or weeks at a time unable to leave my home.”
Becky says she has tried everything to manage the condition, including dermatologists, naturopaths, immunosuppressants, light therapy, diet changes, and supplements, but nothing has provided lasting relief.
“I have used topical and oral steroids as directed by doctors and dermatologists to manage my eczema.
“Unfortunately, the long-term use has thinned my skin and made it worse by putting me into serious drug withdrawal. TSW is not eczema—it’s a withdrawal reaction,” she said.
“There is a massive lack of awareness and education about TSW in New Zealand. I followed medical advice, but now I’m suffering the consequences.”
“I’ve spoken to several people, including another Kiwi, who have undergone this therapy, and they all said it changed their lives. I’m hopeful this will finally give me my life back.”
Becky estimates the total cost of treatment, including visas, flights, and accommodation, will be between $25,000 and $30,000. She is seeking community support to help cover the expenses and spread awareness about the risks of long-term steroid use.
“All funds raised will go directly towards the cost of treatment. Any help—whether it’s sharing my story or donating—would mean the world to me.”
Becky hopes her journey will not only help her heal but also bring greater awareness to TSW and the need for better medical education on its risks.
“This has been the hardest fight of my life, but I’m determined to get through it.”
