Eleven streets in Hoon Hay and Lower Cashmere are going to have their speed limit lowered from 50 to 30 kilometres per hour.

Christchurch City Council approved the speed limit change at its meeting on 28 July.

It affects Palmside Street, Woodbank Street, Karaka Place, Paikea Place, Ferniehurst Street, Molesworth Place, Greenpark Street, Muirson Avenue, McBeath Avenue, Smartlea Street and Weir Place.

Council Transport Operations Manager Stephen Wright said the major cycle route runs through these residential streets, so for safety reasons the council is lowering the speed limit.

“This will make the roads safer for everyone – pedestrians and cyclists.

We consulted the local community about the speed change and the majority of submitters supported the move. A lot of young families and older residents live in the area so most people saw the benefits of the lower speed limit and thought it would make the area safer.’’

Wright said a number of submitters suggested some other streets that would benefit from having a lower speed limit.

The Council will consider those suggestions as part of its safer neighbourhood speeds programme.
