State Highway closes as wet weather hits West Coast

It’s been a wet start to Monday on the West Coast.

Hokitika Airport has recorded just over 80mm of rain in the last twelve hours, with 26mm falling between 2am and 3am.

Greymouth saw just over 60mm in the last twelve hours, according to Metservice.

A Grey District Council spokesperson said crews were are out and about monitoring Arnold Valley Road, Moana, Inchbonnie, Paroa, and other known trouble spots.

“They’re placing warning signs where necessary to keep everyone safe.

“With the rain now stopped, we expect the water to recede fairly quickly.

However, please take extra care if you’re out on the roads this morning and avoid driving through floodwaters whenever possible.
