Emergency services are at the scene of a serious crash in central Christchurch, after a stolen car failed to stop for police.

They were called to a high-speed, three-vehicle collision on Fitzgerald Avenue, near Moorhouse Avenue, just before 10pm.

Multiple people have been injured, with two suffering serious injuries and another two moderately injured.

One vehicle crashed into a power pole, while two other damaged vehicles ended up on the island in the middle of the road.

Chris Lynch Media understands the crash was the result of a driver who failed to stop for police.

A witness said he saw the vehicle speeding along Fitzgerald Avenue.

“The police had set up spikes at the end of Fitzgerald Avenue, near Moorhouse Avenue, but the BMW, in an attempt to flee from police, collided with other cars at what I’d estimate was at least 100 km/h.”

The incident has prompted a large-scale emergency response.

Fitzgerald Avenue has been closed to South Bound lane traffic at Ferry Road.

An Orion contractor is also at the scene.
