Canterbury has been enduring hot, dry weather in recent days, with strong winds exacerbating fire risks across the region. MetService Meteorologist Thapi Makgabutlane said the conditions have been relentless, with little reprieve expected in the immediate forecast.

“The weather has been very dry. We’ve seen over the last couple of months, very dry conditions all throughout the east of the country, including Canterbury and Christchurch,” Makgabutlane said. “Today is another dry day, and unfortunately, those windy conditions continue into Saturday. There might be one or two showers, but I wouldn’t want to overpromise—it has been very dry and windy.”

Fire services are unlikely to get much relief this weekend, as Makgabutlane cautioned that any rain expected next week will be minimal. “At this point, it’s not looking like much. If we’re lucky, maybe a little rain next week, but it won’t be enough to make up for the dryness of the last couple of months,” she said.

New Brighton Santa Parade weather outlook

With the New Brighton Santa Parade scheduled for Saturday, event-goers can expect warm, partly cloudy conditions. “It’s going to be another hot day, so definitely stay sun-smart,” Makgabutlane said. While there’s a chance of a passing shower, the day is expected to remain mostly dry.

Looking ahead to Sunday and beyond

The weather on Sunday is expected to bring slight relief from the heat, with temperatures dropping to more typical mid-20s. “The northwesterly winds will die down a little, and while it’s still mostly dry, there could be a possible shower further inland,” Makgabutlane said.

Heading into next week, cooler temperatures are set to continue. “On Monday, we’ll see those cooler conditions once again, and as the week progresses, we’re crossing fingers for a little rain on the cards,” she said.

While the region waits for much-needed rain, Makgabutlane’s advice is to stay prepared for dry and warm conditions in the days ahead.
