Properties near a large pine forest between Kirwee and West Melton are being evacuated as Fire and Emergency New Zealand crews work to contain a significant blaze.
The fire was first reported shortly after 9pm, prompting a large response.
At least 10 fire trucks have been deployed to the scene at the end of Thompsons Road, with a Command Unit set up nearby.
FENZ confirmed that a caravan park in The Willows area has been evacuated as a precaution due to its proximity to the fire.
A nearby resident described the winds in the area as “really strong” and said the fire appeared to be growing.
“The wind is horrible and keep changing directions, so it’s grown to both the east and the west.”
However, they noted there was a significant Fire and Emergency presence on the scene.
Roadblocks are also being established to secure the area.
