High winds sweeping across the Bridge Hill fire site on Sunday failed to cause any major breakouts, according to Fire and Emergency.
Incident Commander Colin Russell said there were some small flareups during the day, but fire crews were quick to respond.
“It’s been a good team effort from everyone involved today, and we’ve quickly got on top of any flareups we have seen,” he said.
The strong winds have created dust storms across the fire ground, further complicating operations and reducing visibility for motorists on State Highway 73. Russell urged drivers to remain cautious.
“We’d urge everyone to take extra care when driving on the road, as they have been doing since the road was reopened with traffic restrictions,” he said.
With winds forecast to strengthen overnight, Fire and Emergency crews are preparing for further challenges. A drone team and ground crews will be on site to monitor the fire’s perimeter for potential hotspots.
“If we make it through tonight with no significant breakouts, then we are hoping to reduce the number of resources on the fire ground tomorrow,” said Russell.
He also acknowledged the extensive efforts of local brigades.
“It’s been a big effort from all our brigades in the area, and we thank them again for their effort.”
