Ballantynes has sparked mixed reactions from Christchurch families after opting to take this year’s Santa photos with a Google Pixel phone instead of a DSLR camera.
The department store, known for its high-end pricing, defended the decision, suggesting the phone’s 64-megapixel camera provided superior image quality.
However, some parents aren’t convinced.
One parent, who cancelled their booking after learning about the change, said, “I’m not paying $25 for a photo taken on a phone. I might as well do it myself.”
Others, however, were unbothered by the update. “It was a good setup as it usually is,” said another parent. “Phones are pretty much just as good these days.”
So, which is better for capturing special moments like Santa photos?
Advantages of Google Pixel Phone Cameras
Google Pixel phones excel in computational photography, using features like HDR+ and Night Sight to enhance images through AI-driven post-processing. These tools can produce polished, dynamic images, especially in challenging lighting conditions.
Advantages of DSLRs
DSLRs offer larger sensors, capturing more light and detail, particularly in low-light situations. They also allow greater creative control and lens versatility, making them the choice for professional-grade photography.
