Emergency Services at the scene of a car crash where a vehicle has crashed into the ASB bank on Riccarton Road.

Riccarton Road is closed between Matipo Street and Clarence Street.

A St John spokesperson said they were called to the scene just after 3:30 pm.

A police spokesperson said one person has been seriously injured.

The eastbound lane is currently blocked by police and the front of the bank has also been called off by Police.

A witness said he was standing at the intersection when he witnessed the vehicle suddenly accelerate, mount the centre median strip, and crash into the ASB building.

“Concerned about the smoking electric vehicle, I rushed to check on the occupants.

“A bystander managed to extract the passenger, but the driver remained trapped.

It was heartening to see numerous people come together to assist. Emergency services arrived promptly at the scene.”

A police spokesperson said motorists are advised to avoid the area, as the road will be closed for some time.
