Christchurch City Council wants to relocate the flatwater sports facilities at Kerrs Reach and establish a new riverside area in the Avon River Corridor.

In a statement, the council said The Kerrs Hub Plan Change project is open for early feedback, aiming to reshape the area to better accommodate the needs of the local flatwater sports community.

Kerrs Reach is a key site for sports, but has faced challenges with overcrowded facilities that are no longer fit for purpose the council said.

The proposed relocation would move the flatwater clubs to a nearby site, as identified in geotechnical reports.

This would allow for the growth of the clubs, while freeing up space at the current site for development into Wainoni Landing.

If approved, a plan change would shift the designated Activity Zone for flatwater clubs to the opposite side of the river.

The facilities at Porritt Park would be moved, making way for the new landing area.

While details for Wainoni Landing will be finalised later, potential features include a small commercial kiosk, an events pavilion, outdoor spaces for markets, river-viewing platforms, and ecological enhancements.

The site could also include boardwalks through wetlands, cultural design elements, and spaces that encourage play and exploration the council said.

Red Zone manager Dave Little described the Kerrs Reach developments as a “significant project.

Community feedback gathered during the consultation phase will help shape the Council’s draft plan.

Once the draft is approved, there will be a formal notification process, giving the public further opportunities to share their views.
