One of the directors of a North Canterbury-based construction firm is understood to own multiple properties, including several in Hanmer Springs.

As first reported by chrislynchmedia.com, Hanmer Building Solutions entered liquidation on 3 September, owing more than a million dollars to creditors.

That figure is expected to rise following investigations by the liquidator.

The company had operated as a residential building contractor in and around Hanmer Springs for over a decade.

A subcontractor, who wished to remain anonymous, told chrislynchmedia.com that the company had several construction sites active prior to the liquidation.

It’s understood co-director John Phillips reportedly owns five properties in Hanmer Springs and is a part-owner of other properties in the South Island.

A well-placed source, who requested anonymity, said, “There are no winners in this scenario, but John Phillips has left many feeling dissatisfied with how the situation has unfolded.

“The Phillips family is the most influential family in Hanmer Springs,” the source said.

When contacted by chrislynchmedia.com, Phillips declined to comment, saying he was advised by the liquidator not to speak to anyone.

Phillips is listed as a director of other North Canterbury companies, including Hanmer Springs Electrical and Refrigeration Limited, National Investments Limited, and Hanmer Heat Pumps and Air Conditioning Limited.

John’s wife, Linda, and their son, Jason Phillips, were both removed as directors of Hanmer Building Solutions on 1 March, according to the Companies Office website.
