The High Court in Christchurch has delivered a guilty verdict in the death of Nigel Wilson, who was fatally attacked while walking his dog in Bexley Reserve.
Bailey Messervy, then 18 years old, repeatedly stabbed the 62-year-old in the early hours of November 14, 2022.
Wilson died in the hospital eight days later, leading to Messervy being charged with murder.
Wilson confronted Messervy about driving his vehicle at high speed through the reserve, but the confrontation escalated, resulting in Messervy stabbing Wilson eight times, with four blows to the abdomen.
The Crown argued that this constituted a “reckless killing,” asserting that Messervy knew death could result from his attack.
Detective Senior Sergeant Damon Wells said in a statement, police acknowledge the verdict and have spared no effort in bringing those involved to justice.
“Nigel’s family and I would like to acknowledge and thank the members of our community who provided valuable information to assist us with this case from the very start of our investigation.”
He also extended his heartfelt thoughts to Nigel’s family, acknowledging their immense strength throughout the ordeal.
“Our thoughts are with his family, and while the verdict has been reached, this is just one part of the healing process,” said Detective Senior Sergeant Wells.
“While the outcome does not bring Nigel back, the person responsible will be held to account.”
