After years of serving up some of Christchurch’s most beloved burgers, Big Gary’s is closing its doors.
The iconic burger joint on Riccarton Road has been a staple in the community, particularly university students.
Known not just for its food, but for the warmth and friendliness of its owner, David—affectionately known as “Boss Gary.”
In a message on the Big Gary’s website, he announced the bittersweet news that the beloved burger joint would be closing.
“These past forty years have been the best part of my life,” he wrote.
“I’ve been privileged to meet so many of you wonderful people and to share in your lives.
“Your laughter and your fulfilled tummies have been my greatest reward. But the time has come for me to retire and to think about what comes next. I’m not out for good, just stepping back to find a new journey to embark on.”
While the closure of Big Gary’s marks the end of an era, Boss Gary hinted that this isn’t a full goodbye. “… WAIT, there’s more to come!!” he teased in his message. “I hope you’ll join me in the next stage of my journey. I promise it will be AWESOME!”
