Addington School’s bell has returned to its rightful place after being stolen.
As first reported by chrislynchmedia.com, the bell, which had been a significant part of the school’s traditions for many years, was discovered missing on August 4th.
The theft attracted nationwide media attention.
Addington Te Kura Taumatua Principal Donna Bilas told chrislynchmedia.com, “We got our bell back.”
“Thanks to Matt Dixon and the boys at AW Fraser who spotted it in a delivery of brass scrap and recognised it from the media reports.
“It needs a bit of a tidy up, and it’s minus a clanger, but it’s home again with us.”
Bilas said, “We were all gathered on the courts as I carried it in to a huge cheer and applause! It has been awesome to know that so many people in our community care and that kindness can prevail. A wish came true today.”
“So yes, now to clean her up, give her a new clanger, and safely store her for safekeeping and celebrations.”
The bell had hung in the school’s playground for over a decade, and its history stretches back to the school’s founding in 1881.
Originally located in the rose garden, the bell was moved to the school’s remembrance space following the earthquake rebuild and playground redevelopment.
