The extended family of a 13-year-old girl who sustained “unsurvivable” injuries has thanked the Christchurch community for their love and support.

On a Givealittle page, her family said, “Sadly, while on a school excursion, Kymani fell, sustaining an unsurvivable head injury.”

The accident occurred at Alpine Ice Sports Centre in Christchurch on Tuesday.

Her great aunt, Lannie Belle told chrislynchmedia.com the family was in the process of letting go of the schoolgirl, who was on still life support at Christchurch Hospital.

“The Givealittle page was set up to alleviate the additional stress her parents would have to endure in the days ahead” her aunt Joanne Tusa told Chris Lynch Media.

“It was a misunderstanding, but the parents haven’t had a chance to let go.”

“We appreciate every message of love and support that the community has given us.

There have been so many lovely messages and support, and we understand the whole of Christchurch wants to know what happened.”

Haeata Community Campus Dr Peggy Burrows said in a statement ” You may be aware that on Tuesday, 30 July 2024 a student from Haeata Community Campus was involved in a serious accident while on a EOTC trip.

“The school has not received official confirmation of the student’s health status and so cannot make any comment at this time.

We understand that many whānau and ākonga will be affected by this uncertainty and by this tragedy. We will update our school community as soon as we have an official notification.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hilley-Hetaraka whānau at this time.”

Alpine Ice Sports centre said “further to yesterday’s events, Alpine’s staff, management and directors, alongside our wider skating community are heartbroken to learn from media reports that Kymani’s injuries are not survivable.

Our thoughts are with Kymani’s whanau at this unimaginable time. Alpine has again closed our facility today in respect of Kymani and her whanau.”

A Education Ministry spokeswoman said “We are deeply saddened by the tragic news and our thoughts are with the whānau and wider school community. The Ministry’s  traumatic incident team is available to support the school for as long as needed.”
