An offender’s criminal plans were thwarted when police apprehended a man at gunpoint after he was spotted carrying a firearm in Papanui last night.
As first reported by chrislynchmedia.com, police were called to Papanui Road around 7:30 pm.
Christchurch Metro Response Manager Inspector Leairne Dow said, “Police swiftly responded, locating and apprehending the 38-year-old man in under 10 minutes.”
A sawn-off shotgun, cannabis, and methamphetamine were located and seized.
A witness said Papanui Road, near KFC, was swarming with armed police, while staff member at the Rose and Thistle said they were in the midst of their weekly quiz when she noticed police vehicles arriving outside.
“I thought they had pulled someone over, but then saw officers passing our windows with their guns drawn.”
The man was due to appear in the Christchurch District Court today on charges of preparing to commit a crime, unlawfully possessing a firearm, possessing utensils for methamphetamine, and possessing cannabis.
“Police work hard to hold dangerous offenders to account, especially those who show little regard for the safety of our community,” Dow said.
She added, “Police continued to be out in the community, ready to respond to any unlawful behaviour by gangs and anyone who believed that they were above the law.
“If you witnessed any unlawful activity, please contact Police on 111 if there is an immediate risk to people or property.
“Alternatively, you could report information anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
