Nine people have been injured, three seriously, following a multiple vehicle crash on Mount Cook Road, near Tekapo-Twizel Road.
A police spokesman told chrislynchmedia.com the crash was reported just before 10:30am.
NZTA said State Highway 8 is currently BLOCKED near the SH8/SH80 intersection.
A St John spokesperson said they responded with two ambulances, two first response units, one rapid response unit, two managers, one prime vehicle, and three helicopters to the scene.
“Our crews assessed and treated nine patients in total. At this stage, one patient is going to be airlifted to Christchurch hospital in a serious condition, two patients in a serious condition are being airlifted to Dunedin hospital in a serious condition, and six patients have been assessed and treated at the scene in a minor condition.”
Avoid the area or expect delays.
All emergency services are attendance.
The crash is on the same highway where there have been several accidents.
