Canterbury community stalwart Pete Dawson dies

Former Lyttelton stalwart Pete Dawson, who lived in Dunsandel has died.

His family said ‘It is with deep sadness the Dawson family have to announce that Pete died peacefully in his sleep on Friday night.

“He would have been 74 in a month. This is a private time for our family and we thank you for your understanding.

“To honour Pete’s wishes there will be no funeral service. We invite you to please privately celebrate Pete’s memory in your own way. He would approve of a tipple or two. Regards Dee’

The outspoken former RSA Christchurch president was involved in the fishing industry and set up a Lyttelton community Facebook page.

Seafood company Finest Kind said it was “Very sorry to hear this news.”

“We will miss you being around, your support and comments on our feed Finestkind Limited, Women in Seafood and Port Nelson Fishermen’s Association.“

In 2020, St John Banks Peninsula celebrated Pete’s 56 years serving his community.

Pete Dawson honoured for his community service with St John in September 2020.

“We at St John are very proud of your commitment and contribution” they said at the time.

Dawson and his family served their community as members of St John since 1938.

Pete Dawson spoke to Chris Lynch in 2015 to commemorate 100 years since the Gallipoli campaign in World War One.
