Motorists have been left stranded as heavy snow hits inland Canterbury.
Julian Cookson told Chris Lynch Media there was heavy snow at Arthur’s Pass, with crashed cars having come off road just after 11AM.
He said there was no sign of grader and was urging the public to avoid area.
“There was at least one inch of snow on the road with about 15 cars stuck” he said.
NZTA put out an advisory just after midday saying SH7 Lewis Pass and SH73 Arthur’s Pass had closed due to heavy snowfall.
The agency was warning motorists to delay travels through Lewis and Arthur’s Pass.
Snow plough trucks were working along both of these routes the agency said.
A police spokeswoman confirmed to Chris Lynch Media that motorists were also stuck on the Lewis Pass.
All other state highways remained open.
