Christchurch Hospital’s Emergency Department is experiencing an exceptionally busy day, with a significant influx of patients seeking care.
A spokesperson for the hospital said, “Everyone coming to the ED is assessed for urgency soon after arrival. However, unless it’s an emergency, you can expect to wait to be seen.”
The spokesperson advised individuals with non-life-threatening conditions to seek alternative healthcare options. “If it’s not a life-threatening emergency, please call Healthline on 0800 611 116 for free health advice 24/7 or visit one of the websites below for health information and guidance.”
For those in rural areas, including Ashburton, the new telehealth service Ka Ora offers virtual appointments with clinicians on the same day. Ka Ora can be reached at 0800 252 672, although fees may apply.
In the event of a medical emergency, the spokesperson emphasized the importance of immediate action: “If you have a medical emergency and you require urgent assistance, please call 111 immediately.”
Medical emergencies include chest pain or tightness, difficulty breathing, choking, severe bleeding or bleeding that won’t stop, sudden weakness or difficulty talking, fainting, or unconsciousness.
Patients with non-urgent conditions should anticipate extended wait times as staff prioritize emergency treatment and care.
