A solar storm is underway and expected to peak tonight NIWA said.

The U.S. National Weather Service expects G4 (severe) conditions from 6:00-9:00 pm New Zealand local time.

The aurora may be visible much farther north than usual but may be difficult to spot with the naked eye. Much of New Zealand is expecting clear skies.

However, an event of this magnitude is not without risk:

This solar storm is one of the strongest events in a long time (since 2005).

It has the potential to affect communications, GPS, satellite navigation, and power grids.

Transpower has issued a Grid Emergency Notice due to its severity NIWA said.

Charged batteries and flashlights are recommended in case the power goes out.

“While most solar storms don’t cause much impact, this is an *unusually strong event* and it pays to be prepared” NIWA said.

Transpower said it’s aware of a G4 geomagnetic storm that is likely to affect Earth this weekend as a result of significant solar activity producing a coronal mass injection.

“As part of its contingency plan for geomagnetic storms, Transpower is removing some transmission lines from service across the South Island as a precaution to prevent damage to equipment. This has been done in a way to avoid impact on consumers’ electricity supply.

At this stage Transpower does not anticipate any impact on New Zealand’s electricity supply to consumers.    Transpower will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as required.”
