Firefighters are battling a large blaze at the Sheffield historic Hotel.

A Fire and Emergency spokesman told Chris Lynch an occupant from the hotel phoned 111 just after 1AM.

They were alerted to smoke coming from upstairs from a smoke alarm at the Wrights Road property.

He said fire crews are struggling to contain to blaze because of extensive renovations to the hotel over the years, altering roof spaces.

The stairway of the hotel has been compromised.

The Sheffield Fire Station is located across the road from the hotel, and the crew was able to confirm straight away there was a large fire in an upstairs area.

Additional fire crews have been called from Christchurch, Springfield, Darfield and Kirwee.

More crews are coming in from Colgate and Oxford to give the other crews a break.

A fire investigator is on-site, but the cause of the blaze is unknown as the fire is still being put out.

A Police spokeswoman said there were no reported injuries.

The hotel was originally built in 1882.
