At least one cell tower in Christchurch will need to be replaced after being significantly damaged by a suspicious fire.
As first reported by Chris Lynch media, Fire and Emergency crews were called to two cell tower fires last night.
The first blaze was reported at 8.30PM on Mairehau Road, near Chartwell Street at the Spark tower, which is connected to the Chorus telephone exchange.
Chorus’ Head of External Communications Steve Pettigrew said the base of the cell tower was badly damaged.
“There’s no damage to the exchange building itself. The cell tower is used by Spark to provide mobile coverage in the area.”
He said given the damage caused, the tower will need to be replaced.
The second fire occurred about an hour later and was located at a cell tower at the back of Mitre 10 off Ferry Road.
Fire crews has to cut open a back gate to gain entry to the tower.
A Fire and Emergency spokesman said both fires were being treated as suspicious.
He said given the nature of the fires, police were called to the scene of both fires.
